Pizza and Fire Prevention

The Waupaca County Firefighters Association, (WCFFA) recently conducted their Pizza and Fire Prevention project in Waupaca County.  Participating fire departments were from Iola, Scandinavia, Manawa, and Waupaca.

Students in grades K- 5 were eligible to participate. A flyer explaining the project was sent home with the students.  Student names were randomly drawn, with a minimum of two names per grade.  Households were contacted in advance to schedule their fire prevention visit.  On the evening of October 7, firefighters arrived at the households with a fire truck.  Firefighters reviewed the families’ escaped plan, meeting place, and checked for working smoke detectors.  Smoke detectors were distributed as needed.  For participating in the program, households were presented a certificate for a free pizza.

Numerous smoke detectors were found not working, for example, the battery was not seated into the terminals.  The “icing on the cake” was the additional fire prevention contacts made with neighbors who came outside to see the fire truck.
